Why Chesapeakes?

When I started to realize the seriousness of my passion for waterfowling, I decided I wanted to get a retriever to add to the enjoyment of the experience of chasing ducks and geese.  So, one of the first things I did after graduating from college years ago was to start looking for a pup to purchase and train.  I knew the reputation of the Labrador Retriever as being an all around great hunting breed, but I was confused with the choices that were out there.  The Lab had become popular as a pet as well as a hunting retriever and I was concerned about getting a pup that was bred to meet my desires and needs.  That is when I discovered the Chesapeake Bay Retriever.  After much research, I found that the breed as a whole still retained what it was bred for, to retrieve waterfowl and hunt upland birds.  Because the breed has yet to become as popular as the Lab or Golden, most of the Chessies out there still have a lot of the natural ability that it was bred for.   Too many Labs and Goldens have had that bred out of them.  So, I chose a Chessie as my first duck dog and have been in love with them ever since!

Our goal is to produce a hunting companion that is a member of the family as well.  We strive to produce puppies that will be athletic, trainable, have lots of heart and desire to please, with stamina to last all day in the freezing waters retrieving downed ducks or in the field chasing birds.  Our breeding stock is extremely muscular with functional conformity to allow them to work all day.  We have three young children, and since our dogs are inside dogs, temperament is extremely important as well.

My passion for hunting ducks and geese is as strong as it can get and the biggest part of that passion is the involvement of the dogs.  I hunt as much as work will allow and every hunt includes one of my dogs.  I expect my dogs to be good companions in the blind with the ability and desire to retrieve all the birds we harvest.  I train year around always striving to improve the working relationship between myself and my hunting partners.

If you are looking for help in training your Chessie pup, I strongly recommend that you purchase Butch Goodwin’s CD “Retrievers From The Inside Out”.  It is the most complete training program available on the market today. The CD is full of text, pictures, and videos to help you develop your hunting partner into the best that it can be.  You can learn more about his CD at his website::  www.w8n4dux.com/welcome.htm
